PlayStation Vita Launches in Japan

The first commercial Vitas were sold over the weekend, with sales estimated in the high six figures.

On December 17th, 2011, Japanese gamers were finally able to get their hands on the long awaited PlayStation Vita. Sony's slick new system appears to have been in high demand in the company's home country.

Early reports were that Sony planned on 500,000 Vitas shipping for this first launch, but they added on 200,000 more when they realized just how big demand was for the new system. Take into consideration that the Vita sold out in preorders and you've got yourself some impressive figures for Sony.

There are no stats yet on the breakdown between Wi-Fi and 3G versions, but those would be some very interesting numbers to see.

We're still a few months away from the US Vita launch, but if Sony can repeat the success they've had in Japan, the company is going to be sitting in a very nice place.
