Jonathon Blow's 'The Witness' To Debut on PS4

The title has "a limited-time exclusivity" for consoles but could see a simultaneous PC release.

In an interview with Kotaku, Jonathon Blow of "Braid" fame, explained the reasoning behind the PS4 as the debut platform, "People have been speculating that I got a money hat for this agreement with Sony, or that we needed to do this in order to fund development of The Witness. Actually, no money was involved at all.

"The real situation is that, because we are a small developer, we only have the ability to launch on a small number of platforms at once. We liked the idea of being on a console, and originally we thought we might be on the PS3 or Xbox 360, but eventually we decided not to target either of those due to the relatively low system specs... We were going to be a de facto console exclusive for Sony no matter what. As I mentioned, there are people at Sony who are very interested in The Witness, so they somehow percolated up through the ranks the idea of showing the game in the launch show. "

"Of course, Sony wants that show to point out things that are going to be exclusive or special to their console. So to be in the show we signed a timed exclusivity for competing consoles. But this was just a formalization of something that was already de facto. We like the PS4 and we like the people at Sony we are working with, so it was an easy choice to make the agreement."

Blow stopped just short of ruling out a port for the Wii U or "the next Microsoft console," "Our deal with Sony is a limited-time exclusivity that applies only to competing console platforms." When asked, Blow explained that the exclusivity does not apply to the PC or iOS, and left the door open for not only a PC or iOS version, but for a simultaneous release with the PS4 version.

Ubisoft Reveals the 'Watch Dogs' - Possible Game of the Show at E3 2012

It's too early to say yet, but this may be most exciting game of E3. It also might be our first look at a next-gen title.

The Ubisoft press conference could be described as painful, but only if you were to be really polite about it. The hosts were dreadful and the segment on eSports was so poorly done that, as much as we love our eSports, we just didn't want to watch.

Just when it seemed like all we'd see was a bit of 'Assassin's Creed 3,' Ubisoft surprised us all. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot came out to highlight a new IP – a brand new game without a 2 or a 3 behind it. The game is called 'Watch Dogs' and it may just be the game of the show.

It' s a bit hard to describe, but think GTA with futuristic hacking and incredible graphics. Check out the gameplay trailer to see it in action. Things start a little slow, but they build to a hectic and downright crazy climax. In the end, our hero hacks a traffic light to cause a car accident and then a gunfight ensues. It's pretty nuts.

One thing that has everyone scratching their heads is what system this game is coming out for. It looked too pretty for the 360 and PS3, and Ubisoft didn't specify what hardware it would be running on. We're guessing that this is the first game we've seen made for next-gen systems.

Unless Sony or Nintendo have something amazing up their sleeves, Ubisoft may be the ones dominating E3 talk this year.

Bethesda is Hiring for Next-Gen Consoles - Direct X 11 Experience a Plus

The studio has put out a job listing for folks wishing to develop for future hardware.

Whether new hardware is announced at E3 or not, we're on the verge of something new. Within the next few years, the Xbox 360 and PS3 will no longer be the big boys on the block - they'll be replaced with something that, presumably, will be on the bleeding edge of technology. If the endless rumors weren't enough, Bethesda has put out a hiring notice for a next-gen console developer.

Most of the job requirements are pretty standard. Bethesda is looking for people with experience developing for current generation consoles and the ability to work without constant supervision. One thing stands out though. The company says that DirectX 11 programming experience is a plus. That lends some credence to the rumors that the new Xbox will make use of DirectX 11.

This job listing could also refer to the upcoming Wii U, which Bethesda has been considering developing games for. It seems to be a safe bet that after the success of 'Skyrim,' Bethesda will want to stay on the core system train.

Survey Finds that Backwards Compatibility is Most Important for New Hardware

That same survey finds that only a quarter of respondents actually expect it.

Gamers want to be able to keep playing the games they own - there's no reason to expect any differently. Just as DVD owners expect to play their DVDs in a Blu-ray player, gamers want to put their older games in a new system and play them. If there's some sort of upscaling feature, so much the better.

A recent survey conducted by GameSpot reveals that 83% of those that responded marked backwards compatibility as either "somewhat important" or "very important." Perhaps not surprisingly, only 24% of those that answered the survey actually expect the feature in the next generation of consoles.

Also high up on the "want" list are better graphics (80%), the ability to download full games (49%) and better integration of motion controls (32%). Things like Facebook integration, touchscreen controls and 3D capability sat at the bottom of the list.

PS4 Games are in the Works at Sony

The release of the new system isn't expected until 2014 at the earliest.

The PlayStation 3 is still alive and kicking, but that doesn't mean Sony can't have something else in the works. According to Develop Online, Sony has already assigned a few of its game studios to begin work on games for the PlayStation 4.

Though we've heard rumors of a new system before, the timeline does seem to line up with Sony's plans. At launch they said that they're looking for a 10 year lifespan out of the PS3 and a 2014 release would be right at the eight year mark.

Details, as you might imagine, are scant. Though it's been reported that Sony has given the job to at least one of its internal development studios, there are 16 to choose from and there's no word on which studio is handling the task. Don't expect anything official in the near future, but there's something on the horizon for sure.
