Insomniac CEO Ted Price Says Creating New IPs is Scary but Refreshing
Wed Feb 29, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: Insomniac, Resistance (all tags)
The upcoming game 'Overstrike' is the company's first non-'Resistance,' non-'Ratchet and Clank' title in years.
Ted Price is the CEO of Insomniac Games, a company that's in a rare position. Insomniac started making PlayStation exclusive titles when it first launched in 1996. Three game series came out of the studio - 'Spyro,' 'Ratchet & Clank' and 'Resistance' - and that was the company's focus up until now. This year, things are changing for Insomniac. The studio is making a new multi-platform game called 'Overstrikeand stepping away from the titles that got them to where they are.
Price says that the financial advantages of owning your own intellectual properties are nice, but there's more to the new direction than just money. "It's also an opportunity to start something that the team is really enthusiastic about, because it's a franchise with no baggage," he says, "it's starting from scratch, we can take it any direction we want. And that's always a great moment."
As exciting as the new opportunity is, there's difficulty that goes along with it. "Going through that process at the very beginning can be gut-wrenching," says Price about the creation of a completely new title. "You're making big bets on new stories, new characters and new game mechanics that may be unproven."

'Resistance: Burning Skies' Announced for PlayStation Vita
Tue Feb 14, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Resistance, Insomniac, PlayStation Vita (all tags)
The first person shooter franchise goes portable on May 29th with a new developer at the helm.
Sony has a few go-to titles that you can expect to see on every system they have. 'Resistance' is one of those, and it's coming to the Vita on May 29th under the name 'Resistance: Burning Skies.' It's a fairly major FPS that will certainly put the twin stick controls of the Vita to the test.
Insomniac is done with the 'Resistance' franchise, so this installment was picked up by Nihilistic Software. You may have heard of them through 'Vampire the Masquerade: Redemption,' which was a pretty solid title or 'Conan,' which was not.
Of course, the biggest project that Nihilistic worked on was the never released 'StarCraft: Ghost.' Nihilistic was the first dev to work on the project and, according to press accounts, created the better version of the game.

Insomniac is Done with the 'Resistance' Franchise

The company is moving on from exclusive titles to multiplatform games.
Insomniac has been making system exclusive games for Sony since 1996, but they're now breaking out of console exclusivity. The company's upcoming 'Overstrike' will be coming for both the PS3 and Xbox 360 and other future titles are planned for multiplatform release.
This new focus does mean that something has to go though, and that thing is the 'Resistance' franchise. In an interview with Southern Methodist University’s Game::Business::Law Summit today, Insomniac CEO Ted Price said simply, "We won’t be making any more Resistances." Doesn't get much more straightforward than that.
