Nintendo, THQ and SEGA Pull Out of Gamescom
Mon May 14, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Gamescom 2012, THQ, Nintendo, Sega (all tags)
The German game conference is losing out on a few big names due to release date schedules.
There are a few different gaming events each year that we expect to see different game companies attend and Gamescom is one of the big ones. Think of it as a European post-E3 that allows publishers and developers to show off some of their titles a little bit closer to release.
This year though, some of the big names won’t be there. Both THQ and SEGA say that they won’t have any Gamescom presence, with SEGA citing an issue with their AAA release schedule. THQ is almost certainly in the same boat, as their biggest game this year, ‘Darksiders II’ is set to release right around the same time as the show.
Interestingly enough, Blizzard, which has pulled the plug on Blizzcon this year and never attends E3, is still planning to attend the conference.

'Aliens: Colonial Marines' Was Announced Before Development Even Started
Wed Apr 04, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: Aliens, Aliens: Colonial Marines, Sega, Gearbox, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC (all tags)
Guess we can't make fun of them quite as much for what seemed like a ridiculously long development time. We still can of course, just slightly less.
Last year, the folks at Gearbox pulled together and finished up 'Duke Nukem Forever,' a game that had technically been in development at 3D realms for 14 years. It was an impressive feat and a kind of a gift for the community, but many gamers pointed out that Gearbox had its own unfinished game to work on.
'Aliens: Colonial Marines' was announced back in 2006 and hasn't seen the light yet, leading people to think it might become the Gearbox version of 'Duke Nukem Forever.' According to Gearbox president Randy Pitchford, that's because the game was announced even before the team started developing it.
"Everyone was just so excited that the deal got done," says Pitchford. "20th Century Fox, Gearbox and Sega all had to agree to do this and commit themselves to it. The fact that that deal even existed -- everyone on the business side was so excited that the deal happened that they just wanted to tell the world. So before we even started on the game they announced the deal."
'Aliens: Colonial Marines' is set to release this fall and is currently available for preorder on Amazon.

'Jet Grind Radio' is Coming to XBLA and PSN
Fri Feb 24, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: Jet Grind Radio, Jet Set Radio Future, PlayStation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, Dreamcast, Sega (all tags)
One of the last big Dreamcast titles is finally on its way to the major consoles.
'Jet Grind Radio' is one of the most beloved games of the Dreamcast era, and also a fairly niche title. If you want to be all technical about it - hey, we do it for the 'Final Fantasy' titles - the original name of the game is 'Jet Set Radio,' not to be confused with the less beloved 'Jet Set Radio Future.'
There hasn't been any official word on a release date or pricing - just a teaser video that's sure to get fans of the game excited to go. There's also no indication as to what we're getting with the game, and whether the original soundtrack will be included.

Capcom, Namco and Sega Teaming for... Something.
Wed Feb 22, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Capcom, Namco Bandai, Sega, Nintendo, 3DS (all tags)
The collaboration was announced by Nintendo, though the details end there.
This morning, Satoru Iwata announced that a new project was in the works for the 3DS. He didn't say what the project was or show screenshots or a trailer or even reveal the name. What he did say though, is enough to create a huge amount of buzz. The upcoming title will be a collaboration between Capcom, Namco Bandai and Sega.
The trio have launched a teaser site that tells us very little, but does involve a series of numbers that someone on the internet will certainly figure out quickly. When the site first launches, we see a hand punch in numbers on a keypad - 032760.
Theories abound as to what the new title is, from something as simple as a game collection to a mashup fighting game akin to 'Super Smash Bros.' Whatever it is, we hope to find out more soon.

'Sonic Generations' Breaks Preorder Records for the Franchise
Thu Oct 27, 2011 at 08:30 AM ETTags: Sonic Generations, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega (all tags)
Looks like Sega's storied franchise is back on the rise again.
Even the most stalwart 'Sonic' fan has to admit that it hasn't been all good for our furry friend. Somewhere in the 2000s, things started to get weird or strayed too far from the gameplay that fans were looking for and sales changed accordingly.
Things are looking good for Sega when it comes to 'Sonic Generations' though. The company has reported that the latest installment of the game has record high preorders for the franchise. That's a huge step forward and one that will hopefully keep things on the right track for the 'Sonic' games moving forward.
"This year is a milestone for Sonic," says Sega VP Alan Pritchard, adding that "we want to make sure this is the best title that Sonic fans, old and new, have been waiting for."

'Sonic Generations' Includes Unlockable Version of the Original Game
Wed Oct 26, 2011 at 09:30 AM ETTags: Sonic Generations, Sonic the Hedgehog, Sega, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 (all tags)
If you want to get old-school with your 'Sonic' experience, you'll have to earn it.
As easy as it is to rag on Sega for their continued failure with the 'Sonic' games, 'Sonic Generations' actually looks like 'Sonic' done right. You get to relive some classic levels with a full HD and, best of all, you can choose between 2D and 3D versions, depending on whether you want the classic experience or prefer the newer games.
If going back to 2D 'Sonic' games in high definition isn't old school enough for you, Sega has packed in a way to take the game way back to its roots. The entirety of the very first title in the series, 'Sonic the Hedgehog,' is playable in the same classic sprite based style as on the Genesis way back in the day.
In order to play it though, you'll have to do some work. Going through the game will earn you points that you can redeem for goodies in the Skill Shop. Collect enough and you can unlock a Sega Genesis Controller that will give you access to the option to play through the original game.
