'League of Legends' Championships Break Records with 8.2 Million Unique Viewers
Tue Oct 23, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: League of Legends, eSports (all tags)
The peak concurrent viewership for the event was 1.1 million, far more than the next closest event.
eSports has been growing very quickly over the last few years and the 'League of Legends' Season 2 championships show just how far we've come. A year or so ago, 100,000 viewers was unheard of. Recently, both MLG and Valve's 'DoTA 2' tournament drew record viewers, peaking at around 500,000 simultaneous viewers. This blows them all away.
The championships for 'League of Legends' drew in 8.2 million unique viewers between the internet and TV. Online concurrent viewers peaked at just over 1.1 million people. That's the equivalent of one Rhode Island streaming the live event simultaneously. It's the kind of number that's making eSports hard to ignore.
Riot has promised that Season 3 will be even bigger and it seems like they're going to be able to make it happen. The next major eSports event – the MLG Fall Championship – is just a week away. Riot has certainly given them a lot to live up to.

'League of Legends' Season 3 Offers "The Biggest Prize Pool in eSports History"
Tue Aug 07, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: League of Legends, Riot, eSports (all tags)
In addition to the chunk of change teams can get for winning events, Riot is implementing salaries to make 'League of Legends' a real career option.
Riot is making a big push for eSports dominance and their latest announcement is something that's going to be good for the fans, but even more for the players. The company promises the biggest prize pool in the history of eSports and "millions of dollars on the line."
Where it gets really interesting is in the way teams are getting paid. There are, of course, big prizes for winning each tournament. Even bigger though, is the opportunity to pull in salaries instead of just one-off prizes. Riot says that the implimentation of salaries is to "ensure 'League of Legends' is a sustainable career choice for professional players." Just how those will be doled out and who will get them is still quite a mystery.
Just like traditional sports, the new season of 'League of Legends' will feature both a regular season and playoffs that culminate in a world championship match.
The new season will kick off in early 2013, with the results of this year's regional matches directly influencing who will pre-qualify for next year's league.

Fighting Games are Coming to MLG
Tue Jul 10, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: MLG, eSports (all tags)
Finally the ultra-competitive fighting game community will be coming to MLG.
MLG has really been stepping up its game this year, and they're adding even more to their already impressive lineup of games. Starting with the Summer Championship in Raleigh, both 'Mortal Kombat' and 'Soul Calibur V' will be added to the lineup. The PS3 versions will be used, but presuming arcade sticks are permissible, there shouldn't be too much of a difference.
To kick things off, there will be a full day Fighter Arena on August 10th. Players will compete to participate in the championship and some big cash prizes.

BlizzCon Cancelled This Year Due to "Jam Packed Schedule"
Thu Jan 26, 2012 at 10:30 AM ETTags: Blizzard, BlizzCon, StarCraft II, Mists of Pandaria, Diablo III, eSports, Heart of the Swarm, World of Warcraft (all tags)
The convention will be back in 2013. Until then Blizzard is supplying us with the 2012 Battle.net Championship
Blizzard has a lot on its plate for the next year. ' StarCraft II: Heart of the Swarm' is under development, the 'Warcraft' expansion 'Mists of Pandaria' is in the works and the long-awaited ' Diablo III' will be released. Add to that the rumored console version of 'Diablo III' and whatever the Blizzard's mystery project is as you've got what the Blizzard blog calls a "jam-packed schedule."
In place of BlizzCon, Blizzard has announced the Battle.net World Championship, which will feature the best of the best players in 'StarCraft II' and 'World of Warcraft.' It's a nice way to plug eSports, but an event that happens in Asia isn't exactly going to make up for the US based fan celebration.
With no BlizzCon 2012 to announce products through, this may simply mean that Blizzard has nothing exciting and new to reveal this year. It will certainly make BlizzCon 2013 a much more hotly anticipated event.
