The wasteland is huge, but it is not empty.
Developer Avalanche Studios brought a 20-minute gameplay video of its upcoming 'Mad Max' game to Gamescom this year, and the people over at the IGN YouTube page have put it up so that the rest of us can check out the high-octane action.
The beginning of the video shows off a bit of the vehicle customization process available to players. The currency of the game is scrap metal, and players can use their stash to trick out their car with upgrades like beefier engines, better wheels, and damage-dealing ramming grills.
The vast wasteland is filled with simple side quests that players can tackle between missions, as a quick glimpse at the game map handily demonstrates. Some side quests look to be able to be completed without even leaving the car, requiring players to just pull down a structure using the handy car harpoon.
Max can also use hot air balloon locations to scout out his surroundings and mark side quest locations to his map.
The video ends with a story mission, which shows off Max's combat skills both in and out of his car. Vehicle combat utilizes many different weapons, from high-speed rams to side-mounted flame throwers to Max shooting his shotgun from the driver's side window. Melee combat involves both light and heavy blows and a counter system, and Max can pick up and use melee weapons that he finds lying around as well.
