Square Enix Offering 'Omikron: The Nomad Soul' Free To Honor David Bowie

Lest anyone forgot, once you dig yourself out of the "Alan Rickman is dead" funk, you're probably still not done processing the fact that David Bowie left us this week too. And if playing Ziggy Stardust on a constant loop isn't enough to help with the coping process, Square Enix is lending a helping hand by offering 'Omikron: The Nomad Soul' for free on its digital storefront from now until next Friday, January 22nd. 

'Omikron' was Bowie's highest profile foray into the world of games, with Bowie not just providing full blown songs (a bunch of which ended up on 1999's 'Hours...'), but a huge chunk of the score, as well as input into the story and world design. Even beyond Bowie's involvement, though, it's also interesting for being the first game made by David Cage's studio Quantic Dream, of 'Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit'/'Heavy Rain'/'Beyond: Two Souls' fame. Like all three of those games, 'Omikron' was definitely flawed, and it's graphically aged like hell, but also like all three of those games, it was wildly ambitious, and not lacking in great, meta ideas ahead of their time, which made it feel right at home on the Dreamcast. At the center, though, is some really great late-era music from the Thin White Duke. It's definitely worth a go for that alone.
