Razer Picks-Up All of OUYA's Software, Including the Games & Online Store

Current OUYA hardware not part of the deal.

With the Forge TV, Razer has made it clear that the Android console market is a one of the company's targets. And now, Razer has completed an acquisition that will send waves through that market. Razer has acquired all of OUYA's software assets, which includes the OUYA online store. The OUYA store will be re-launched as "Cortex" and will be featured on all Android TV platforms.

With the move, Razer picks up the OUYA's marketplace without picking up the OUYA hardware. For OUYA's users, Razer has plans to not only allow account migration onto the Forge TV platform, but also to offer discounts on Forget TV and Serval bundles. There even appears to be plans to let users use OUYA controllers with the Forger TV.

From Razer CEO Min-Liang Tan, "Razer has a long-term vision for Android TV and Android-based TV consoles, such as the Xiaomi Mi Box and Alibaba Tmall Box, to which OUYA already publishes. OUYA’s work with game developers, both triple A and indies, went a long way in bringing Android games to the living room and Razer intends to further that work. This acquisition is envisaged to usher more developers and content to the Android TV platform."

While Razer is capturing the OUYA's software business and side-stepping the hardware side, the OUYA name is not dead. Razer has plans to use OUYA as software name in future Android TV offerings (possible under an easy to run line of games for Android-based TV console games).
