A 'Saints Row' PSP Title Has Been Unearthed

Volition Streaming Later This Week

Video game archival efforts are a minor, but vitally important part of the industry now, especially with situations like 'P.T.' happening, where the game doesn't even exist anymore except on a scant few lucky PS4 hard drives, or the Nintendo Playstation prototype that was found just sitting in some guy's garage last year. 

So, it's kind of a big deal when a developer comes out and says they found something they were working on that was on the verge of being thrown out that only a few people who were even working in the building when it was being developed knew of. And that's exactly what has apparently happened at Volition, where, according to the teaser embedded below, a hapless video producer at the company found a PSP dev kit just sitting in a closet. That dev kit just happened to be holding onto a disk containing an abandoned PSP version of 'Saints Row'.

The game, titled 'Saints Row: Undercover', was actually fairly deep into development. The graphics are original DS rough, but the game appears to be very playable, to the point that Volition will be holding a livestream for the game later this coming Thursday (and that'd be happening right over here).  The real fascinating stuff is in the teaser below, though, where they discuss the reluctance of studio brass to even allow the game to be shown, despite the fact that the game itself seeing any sort of fruition has a zero percent chance of happening. Really, though, it should be the opposite: screw ups, outtakes, forgotten footage/clips are a staple of film and music. The fact that every video game has to be presented as all killer all the time kinda devalues where the industry's headed. So this livestream is gonna be a fascinating bit of gaming "what if", one that hopefully other developers will be learning from before they toss out that old unfinished build for good.
