PlayStation Vita 2 Unlikely Thanks To Mobile Gaming, Says Sony President

Now if we could get a Vita to also make phone calls...

A follow-up handheld console to succeed Sony's PlayStation Vita is unlikely to happen soon given the current prominence of phone-based gaming, according to Sony's president.

Shuhei Yoshida, speaking at EGX 2015, said that the "climate is not healthy for now" for a true Vita 2 because of the "huge dominance of mobile gaming," Eurogamer reports.

Yoshida noted the fact that games are easily accessible on mobile devices and the fact that most popular mobile games are free to play, meaning that they hold no risk for gamers to pick them up and try them out. Neither of these factors makes for an easy time selling games in the traditional handheld market.

Sony first entered into the handheld games market with the PSP, but its follow-up, the Vita, hasn't been able to rack up sales numbers anywhere close to those of its older brother.
