What paintball has to do with Halo.
Breakout is a new multiplayer game mode that will be found in 'Halo 5: Guardians' once it launches later this month. The game mode disables respawns, and teams win rounds by completely eliminating the opposing team. A recently published blog post on Halo Waypoint shows some of the design basics that went into the creation of all of the maps for this "last man standing" multiplayer mode.
According to multiplayer design director Kevin Franklin, the inspiration for Breakout's level designs came from his playing paintball. The levels feature heavily defensible starting points on each side of the map with a "no man's land" in the middle. One of the driving principles of Breakout level design, says designer Quinn Delhoyo, is to reward players who take initiative, placing strong buffs in locations that require moving through exposed, vulnerable areas.
The result is a game mode that emphasizes strategy and positioning. Teams are required to work together to make sure no opposing players can sneak around the map and surprise them from behind. The Neutral Flag, a relatively recent addition to the game mode, adds another layer to the victory condition. If a team can move the flag from the middle of the map to the opposing team's starting area, they win the round, forcing everyone to play aggressively as well as defensively.
