PlayStation VR Verdict: What a Launch[teaser]Come see the review. [/teaser] Skip to the review here. PlayStation VR. Its headset, an accessory, and a sub-platform to the biggest thing currently in gaming, the PS4. It's also the console arm of the biggest shake-up in gaming since perhaps the 1990's (or at least since the app store and Facebook followed the Nintendo Wii into pursuing a very different audience). Being Sony, it completely follows that the PS VR is slick in a way that invokes the seldom-mentioned PlayStation Vita. But the Vita is (and was at launch) a product out of time. In contrast, the PS VR's relationship to the worldly PS4 automatically gives it a bigger potential user base, and perhaps a much more direct line into home theaters than anything on the PC. But where the hardware can get a platform a foot in the door, it's the games and software that will get it invited to stay. Of the two bundles that Sony has offered, the PlayStation VR Launch Bundle is the more potent. (Check out the review here). But unlike some of my other current pursuits, like 4K HDR everything, more powerful hardware, and higher fidelity gaming and video content, PS VR doesn't just slot into the place of an older display or console or even AVR/speakers/ sub/keyboard/mouse, etc. To be clear, PS VR is a hot product, but carrying that hotness through to year over year success. That takes buyers and players and content-makers who are still excited in six months, 12 months and beyond. 'Atelier Shallie Plus' Heads West in January[teaser]Includes new storylines, dungeons, and more.[/teaser] Koei Tecmo has announced that they will be releasing 'Atelier Shallie Plus: Alchemists of The Dusk Sea' in the West on PS Vita on January 17. The game is an enhanced edition of the PS3 JRPG 'Atelier Shallie' and includes a dramatically expanded story that ties the game in with its predecessors, as well as new dungeons and boss battles. There will also be a limited edition of the game available on the NIS America online store for $54.99 that includes the following: Atelier Shallie Plus: Alchemists of the Dusk Sea for PS Vita 30-Track original soundtrack with jewel case Microfiber cloth (6″ x 6″) Full-color, 48-page softcover art book Collector’s box (Includes all the above) I never played this when it first released, but I was extremely fond of 'Ayesha' and 'Escha & Logy' the two games that preceded it in its trilogy, so this is a good opportunity to finally give it a shot. 'Red Dead Redemption 2' Announced, Due Out Fall 2017[teaser]Should've called it 'Red Dead Revengeance'.[/teaser] Today, Rockstar has put an end to their teasing and confirmed the existence of 'Red Dead Redemption 2', which is due out in Fall 2017 on PS4 and Xbox One, no PC version has been announced at this time. Additionally, a trailer for the game will be released on October 20th at 11AM ET. Rockstar describes the game as follows: Developed by the creators of Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, Red Dead Redemption 2 is an epic tale of life in America’s unforgiving heartland. The game’s vast and atmospheric world will also provide the foundation for a brand new online multiplayer experience. Earlier today, it was discovered that Take Two had trademarked 'Red Dead Online' suggesting that the game will have a mode similar to 'GTA Online' as seen in 'Grand Theft Auto V', but time will tell what form of online play the game has. Get Another Look at The Voice Cast for 'Final Fantasy XV'[teaser]The cast share their memories of the series.[/teaser] Square Enix has released the latest trailer for 'Final Fantasy XV', the third video showcasing the game's voice cast. In this video, the cast discuss both their memories of the franchise and anecdotes from their time recording for the game. You can catch the video right here. I appreciate studios giving a bit more of a spotlight to their voice cast, particularly in an era where it seems like a lot of voice actors get swept under the rug. Hearing them talk about their fondness for games like 'FF5' and 'FF8', as well as talking about their sessions in the recording booth feels genuine, and it's fun to listen to. 'Final Fantasy XV' releases on PS4 and Xbox One on November 29th. You can find the latest info on 'Final Fantasy XV' linked from our Video Game Release Schedule. United Front Games Closes Down[teaser]'Sleeping Dogs' developer closes after 9 years in business.[/teaser] Today, United Front Games, the studio behind titles such as 'Modnation Racers' and undoubtedly their biggest hit 'Sleeping Dogs', has closed down today. The studio was in the midst of the early access period for their latest game 'SMASH+GRAB', which has since been removed for purchase from Steam. Following the release of 'Sleeping Dogs' which was a success for the studio, they seemed to be having a great deal of financial difficulty following the cancellation of 'Triad Wars', the multiplayer game set in the 'Sleeping Dogs' universe, and 'SMASH+GRAB' failed to gain much traction. Though the closure was unclear at first, it has since been made apparent that the studio has indeed been shuttered, with developers from the studio such as producer Jen Timm confirming the closure, stating: "Currently mourning the best job I've ever had, and the most wonderful team I've ever worked with. The end of a great era. Goodbye, UFG." While the studio had trouble landing much success outside of 'Sleeping Dogs', their games lineup was always interesting and diverse, and it's a shame that they've been shuttered. Here's hoping all affected land on their feet again soon. Source: United Front GamesPosted Tue Oct 18, 2016 at 05:33 AM PDT by:
