Today's Nintendo eShop Update Features 'Excitebots: Trick Racing' and 'Picross'[teaser]A slow week as a plumber is running around on iOS.[/teaser] Every Thursday brings new content to the Nintendo eShop, and this week is no exception even if it's not as packed as usual. The December 15th update to the Nintendo's virtual store is highlighted by Wii re-release of 'Excitebots: Trick Racing.' Monster Games' well-received racing game allows players to race as animals and robotic insects in some crazy race-types. Also hitting the store this week is 'Picross e7' on 3DS, and multiplayer word game 'Scribble' on Wii U. If this week feels empty, it's because Nintendo's biggest release this week isn't actually on a Nintendo system. 'Super Mario Run,' the publisher's first iOS game, launched today. Nintendo fans aren't totally left in the cold, though, as several Wii U and 3DS virtual console titles have been discounted to celebrate the launch. This includes 'Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga,' 'Mario Tennis,' 'NES Open Tournament Golf,' and 'Wrecking Crew.' Finally, other new titles include 'Breakout Defense' on Wii U and 'Mercenaries Saga 3' on 3DS. Source: NintendoPosted Thu Dec 15, 2016 at 11:41 AM PST by: -

'Yakuza 0's Latest Trailer Shows Off Revamped Battle System[teaser]Each character has three separate styles.[/teaser] Sega has released a new trailer for 'Yakuza 0,' which outlines the action-adventure title's combat system. Each character has three unique fighting stances to choose from, which will allow for more varied combat. Series protagonist Kiryu can fight in a brawler stance, a rush style, and the powerful beast stance that will have the character automatically picking up weapons in the environment. Meanwhile the game's second playable character, Majima, has a stylish dancing style called breaker, one where he uses a baseball bat called slugger, and a balanced stance called thug. 'Yakuza 0' is a prequel to the series and looks to be a good starting point for players looking to get into 'Yakuza.' Players will get to control series' protagonist Kazuma Kiryu as usual, but Goro Majima will also be playable in 1988. The story dives into the past of both men, and reveals what inspired Kiryu to become a member of the Yakuza. 'Yakuza 0' is coming to PS4 in North America and in Europe on January 24th. Free Holiday Mission Now Available for 'Hitman'[teaser]Featuring terrific 'Home Alone' nods.[/teaser] IO Interactive has released a free Christmas-themed mission for this year's excellent 'Hitman' reboot, sending Agent 47 back to Paris to stop a couple of thieves from stealing gifts scattered around a mansion. If 47 finds any gifts before the thieves, they'll have items inside that he can use to stop them. If this all sounds very 'Home Alone', that's absolutely intentional, and the two targets are named Harry and Marv, after the villains from the classic holiday movie. This update is completely free and can be downloaded now. IO has stated that they're releasing this to raise awareness for the World Cancer Research Fund. Koei Tecmo Bringing 'Nights of Azure' and 'Atelier Sophie' to Steam in February[teaser]Two Gust JRPGs make their way to PC.[/teaser] Koei Tecmo has announced today that they will be bringing two of Gust's recent PS4 titles to Steam next year with ports of 'Nights of Azure' and 'Atelier Sophie'. These will be Gust's first titles on PC, to be followed by a release of 'Atelier Firis' that will follow later in the year. 'Nights of Azure' is a dark Action RPG set on the mysterious Rusewall Island where no one sleeps at night and much of humanity has been changed into monsters. It feels very much like it was lifted directly from the PS2 era in a way I greatly enjoyed. You can see a trailer for the already released PS4 version below: 'Atelier Sophie' is the first entry in the 'Mysterious' trilogy of 'Atelier' games, starring a young girl who lives alone, working as an alchemist in her small town. One day, she discovers a mysterious talking book that sends her on an adventure to reclaim its memories. You can see a trailer for the PS4 version below: Both titles will be released on Steam on February 7th, 2017. Source: Koei TecmoPosted Tue Dec 13, 2016 at 06:13 AM PST by: -
'Old Time Hockey' Looks to Bring Back Simple Sports Titles[teaser]Watch the debut trailer.[/teaser] Gaming enthusiasts that feel like sports game have gotten too complicated will rejoice with the announcement of 'Old Time Hockey.' This arcade sports title takes inspiration from classic titles from the 80s and 90s to offer up a modern game that is more accessible. This light-hearted hockey game takes place in the 70s, and will release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam early next year. "Everything from 'NHL 94,' 'Blades of Steel,' to other sports titles like 'NBA Jam' and 'Tecmo Bowl' inspired us," revealed Director Karthik Venkateshan. Venkateshan said that the team "wanted to recreate that old familiar experience of playing these games on the couch with friends," which is why 'Old Time Hockey' will feature 5-on-5 gameplay, and can use a simple two-button control scheme as well as more modern variations. Check out the trailer below: 'Old Time Hockey' will release in early 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. Source: V7 EntertainmentPosted Mon Dec 12, 2016 at 10:05 AM PST by: -
An Essential Media Accessory for the Xbox One S - PDP Talon Media Remote Impressions[teaser]Press Y to search.[/teaser] Editor's Notes: PDP Talon Media Remote tested using a Xbox One and a variety of media applications, including the Blu-ray/Ultra HD Blu-ray Player app. It's been over four months since the Xbox One S was introduced and reviewed (see here), and no doubt in that time, lots of new users have picked up either a Xbox One or Xbox One S for the first time. (With many more to come this month.) And presumably, any new user has found that using the controller for certain applications, such as Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, and for watching Blu-rays, or with the Xbox One S, Ultra HD Blu-rays, comes with a bit of annoyance. Not only is a Xbox One controller a bit big and unwieldy for media playback, but it tends to go to sleep. If watching even a 20 minute show, or worse a two hour movie, a sleeping controller, that when awake is easy to bump say on the shoulder buttons, is problematic. Happily, the Xbox One & Xbox One S have IR ports built-in the front, and these ports work with Microsoft's own Xbox One Media Remote. I reviewed that remote way back in 2014 (see here), and I found that while it will get the job done, it was lacking in some areas and a little bit overpriced. This past fall, PDP introduced their officially licensed Xbox One media remote, the PDP Talon Media Remote. While it's obviously quite similar, right off the bat, the PDP Talon has two huge advantages over the Microsoft design, it actually has X/Y/A/B cluster of buttons (an essential for some apps) and it's cheaper at $19.99. The Talon is very similar to the Microsoft media remote, and it carries a rubberized texture, low-profile buttons, and lights up with motion or by pressing a button. Unlike the Microsoft design, however, the Talon has a flat bottom. This keeps it from lighting up constantly as the Microsoft remote tends to do. Also, when the Talon lights up, it quickly goes dark again. The Microsoft remote's top and buttons are one rubbery piece while the PDP remote's buttons are separate. The PDP remote bottom slides off to access the battery compartment (two AAA batteries, which are included in the box) in a similar fashion to the Microsoft remote. One other big difference for me is that while the Microsoft remote has a stylish Xbox One button, the PDP remote's Xbox One button is bit on the cheap-looking side. In use, I tried out the HBO Now app, Netflix, Amazon, YouTube, Groove, and of course, Ultra HD Blu-ray. In all, the PDP Talon was excellent, both for basic playback control like Pause/Play and menu navigation, but also in being able to do things like hit Y for Search of B for Back when needed. Watching 'Creed' in Ultra HD Blu-ray, I could Play/Pause, Fast Forward, Rewind (dedicated buttons), navigate to the next and scene and back (dedicated buttons) and navigate both the disc menu and the onscreen app menu. That's really where this remote ends for me. It can't do things like instantly switch audio tracks or eject discs. (Even the CC button is inert, which is a shame as a subtitle button would be welcome.) The remote offers the ability to control the Xbox One's OneGuide and to control TV volume via the IR blaster, but these Xbox One centric features really aren't for me, so I left them alone. Compared with the Microsoft remote, the Talon has its Play/Pause control cluster at the top of the remote, which does place them closer to the Menu buttons. Either way, having the X/Y/A/B cluster alone makes The PDP Talon Media Remote worth choosing over the Microsoft design, and it's my preferred way to watch Ultra HD Blu-rays on the Xbox One S.
