Kotaku "Reports" That 'Doom 4' Is "Off Track"

The litany of trouble signs for 'Doom 4' begs the question, when was it ever on track?

It has been years since id was sold to Bethesda parent, ZeniMax, and in that time the studio has produced one game with its extravagant id Tech 5 engine. That game was 'Rage,' and is by most accounts better left unremembered. id Software's ongoing turnover, combined with five years of 'Doom 4' with nothing to show for it has apparently piqued the curiosity of Kotaku.

In an article entitled 'Five Years and Nothing to Show: How Doom 4 Got Off Track,' an outline of the past five project years is presented along with an absence of a hopeful outlook for the project. Within that outline, which is studded with moments where the underway work was cited as lacking in both quality and excitement, is a moment in 2011 not long after 'Rage' debuted to an unforgiving public, where ZeniMax/Bethesda decided to become more involved and reboot the development of 'Doom 4.'

Zenimax's ambitious plan was to take the 'Rage' team that was currently working on the suddenly cancelled 'Rage 2' and 'Rage' DLC, and combine it with the 'Doom 4' team that had just necessitated a project reboot. According to the article, with this kind of oversight, "ZeniMax executives told id leads that 'Doom 4 can and should be as big as Skyrim,' as far as both sales and cultural impact."

While at one point the project suffered due to designs that mimicked the heavily scripted single player of 'Call of Duty,' the project is currently ongoing without that particular focus, presumably now with an ultimate goal to ship on next-generation consoles.

Bethesda May Take Over the STALKER License

The rumor of a straight up buyout may not be true, but the licensing deal doesn't seem too farfetched.

The folks at Bethesda are no strangers to taking over properties and turning them into something completely new. According to a recent post, the company may be taking over the 'STALKER' series, which has been abandoned by its original team.

'STALKER 2' was supposed to be developed for a 2012 release but was cancelled once the original 'STALKER' team left. It's not exactly the largest name in gaming, but Bethesda is a big enough publisher to make things happen for the game.

Just what Bethesda will do with the franchise is a mystery, but if 'STALKER 2' is anywhere close to done, you can bet that'll be the first move.

For our European friends, the steampunk, stealth-action game is hitting on October 12th.

Bethesda's take on an assassination game, 'Dishonored,'will be hitting shelves on October 9th, or October 12th for our overseas friends.

If you've not yet seen the trailer, you absolutely should. Even if first-person stealth based around assassinations isn't your thing, the unique style is something that's well worth checking out.

'Elder Scrolls Online' Officially Announced

Mon May 07, 2012 at 10:30 AM ET
Tags: Elder Scrolls Online, Elder Scrolls, Bethesda, ZeniMax (all tags)

It's being developed by ZeniMax, rather than Bethesda, which should prove interesting.

Since the first 'Elder Scrolls' game came out, there have been fans hoping for a way to share that adventure with a friend or two. The recent announcement by ZeniMax reveals that you'll be getting a bit more than you bargained for.

A fully fledged 'Elder Scrolls' MMORPG is on the way, and has already been in the works for several years. Not too terribly much has been revealed, but we do know that there will be three opposing factions and that PvP of 100 vs 100 will be possible.

Fan response has been mixed and even trends towards the negative. Past games, including the smash hit 'Skyrim' have all revolved around the main character as the one true hero that could save the world – an MMO takes that away.

We'll see more of what ZeniMax has in store for us as time goes on, with more details almost certain to be revealed at E3.

'Prey 2' Delayed Due to Quality Issues – No Date Set

Tags: Prey, Prey 2, Bethesda, Xbox 360, PC (all tags)

The game won't be out in 2012, but it also hasn't been cancelled.

If you never played 'Prey' then you missed out on a very cool early title for the Xbox 360 and PC. It used portals in a really interesting way – pre 'Portal' no less – and was generally considered to be a unique and interesting game. Considering the reception the first one got, there are some high expectations for 'Prey 2.'

Unfortunately, things aren't going well over with the developers, Human Head Studios. Bethesda has announced that the game will be delayed due to quality issues. "The game does not currently meet our quality standards," says a Bethesda rep. "We are determined only to release the AAA game that fans rightfully expect, and are unwilling to compromise our quality standards to meet a release schedule."

Rumor: An Elder Scrolls MMO is On the Way

Mon Mar 19, 2012 at 10:30 AM ET
Tags: Bethesda, Skyrim, Elder Scrolls, MMORPGs, Rumors and Speculation (all tags)

Sources say that the game will be announced in May and will have massive E3 presence.

The 'Elder Scrolls' series has been impressive from the beginning, offering large worlds with seemingly infinite places to explore and countless quests and NPCs to interact with. For lack of a better term, they're a bit like offline MMOs – or if you prefer, MMOs are like online versions of Elder Scrolls games.

Either way, the line between the two is about to be broken completely. If rumors are to be believed, we'll be seeing an 'Elder Scrolls' MMO announced in May, with a huge E3 presence to follow it up. We've known for some time that ZeniMax and Bethesda were working on an online game, but this is the first indication that the followup to 'Skyrim' would be an online game.
