EA Opens a Gothenburg Studio to Focus on the Frostbite 2 Engine
Tue Mar 06, 2012 at 01:30 PM ETTags: EA, EA Gothenburg, Battlefield 3 (all tags)
The Frostbite 2 engine is currently used in 'Battlefield 3,' and 'Need for Speed: The Run.'
'Battlefield 3' was more than just a killer multiplayer experience. It was also the first game to use the new Frostbite 2 engine.
EA must have been pretty pleased with Frostbite 2, because they just opened a new studio in Gothernburg, Sweden focusing exclusively on making games using the engine. The studio is currently hiring a boatload of new people for positions within the studio.
The studio hasn't revealed any information on what projects it will be tackling, but we expect to hear more once EA Gothenburg gets a full staff.

'Mass Effect 3' Ships with Reversible Cover for Female Shepards
Thu Feb 23, 2012 at 12:30 PM ETTags: Mass Effect, Mass Effect 3, EA, BioWare (all tags)
It's a nice touch for those that prefer a female lead.
One of the very cool things about the 'Mass Effect' series, and BioWare games in general, is that your protagonist can be anyone you want. Well, anything you can create at least. Want a sexy female lead, guy that looks like John Waters or something in between? You can make it happen.
'Mass Effect 3' ups those options by giving you a choice in box art too. If you prefer a male Shepard, just leave the box as is, if your Shepard is a woman, flip the insert and you'll be represented on the cover too. Of course, these are the generic versions of the character, so unless you stick with default, it's not going to be the truest representation.
Still, the option is nice for gamers that want to keep their games on display and don't want to be stuck with one cover option.

EA Pulls its 'Battlefield 3' iOS Game for Lack of Quality
Thu Feb 23, 2012 at 10:30 AM ETTags: Battlefield 3, EA (all tags)
With the amount of broken of just terrible games on the app store as it is, it's nice to see a developer do something about it.
Games made for the iPhone aren't always of the highest quality. In fact, it's probably a safe bet to say that a majority of them are pretty terrible. EA's 'Battlefield 3: Aftershock' definitely was. It had a 2.5 star rating with comments raging about the poor controls and glitches throughout the game.
In response to this, EA has pulled the game from the App Store. They made a game, the game was crap and they pulled the game - it makes so much sense but it's something you'll almost never see. After all, the 'Battlefield' brand will bring in app sales whether the game is good or not.
EA Mobile is going to take another look at the game and see if there's something they can do to fix it. A statement from the company says that they are "currently re-evaluating the app in response to the consumer feedback we've received."

'Madden NFL 13' Will Feature a Revamped Defense
Wed Feb 22, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: EA, Madden NFL 13, Madden (all tags)
It's been a long time coming, but the Madden team will be working on making defense fun.
There's nothing quite like making that perfect pass and running 70 yards for the touchdown, or taking your QB in Tebow style to get those last minute points. Of course, once you've done that you're stuck playing defense, which can become quite a chore.
EA's chief creative officer Richard Hilleman says that the main focus of the development team for this year's game is making defense a little less painful. "What we're after is a better defense that's more fun to play," he says, adding that new members of the Madden team "haven't accepted any of the conventional wisdom about the product."

'SSX' Will Use Online Pass to Unlock Content
Tue Jan 31, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: Online Pass, SSX, EA (all tags)
EA really wants you buying a new copy of the hotly anticipated snowboarding game.
Companies are trying a lot of things to encourage users to buy new games instead of opting for cheaper used games. The latest is the Online Pass. Games with Online Pass require that you enter a code when you first boot the game. If you don't have that code, you miss out on content.
It's been revealed that the upcoming snowboarding game 'SSX' will use Online Pass to control used sales. There's no word yet on what you'll miss out on if you pick up a used copy but we're guessing multiplayer.
If you do happen to pick up a used copy of the game and you want to get that online pass, it will be available for purchase for $10 on PSN or Xbox Live.

Playing EA Demos Will Unlock Items in Other EA Games
Fri Jan 13, 2012 at 11:30 AM ETTags: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, Mass Effect, Mass Effect 3, EA, Promotions, Demos (all tags)
You'll be able to get special items in both 'Amalur' and 'Mass Effect 3.'
Exclusive items are one tool that game companies use to get you to do certain things. They utilize these extras to convince you to preorder, buy a special edition of the game you want and even buy a game that you don't actually want in the first place. We're not saying it's bad mind you - that's just how marketing works.
EA's newest use of these promotional items requires no extra money from you at all. All you need to do is download and play a demo. It doesn't get much simpler than that.
The two games tied together in this promotion are 'Mass Effect 3' and 'Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning,' and you can get exclusive weapons and armor in both. The promo video seems to imply that you'll need to play both demos, but it seems a bit odd that you'd need to play a demo for a game you already own. Still, free exclusive items for playing demos - it's an interesting idea.
