Electronic Arts Promises Its Top Developers For New Star Wars Licensing Deal

Life after LucasArts starts with DICE and Visceral.

After closing LucasArts, Disney has entered into a multi-year exclusive licensing agreement with Electronics Arts for 'Star Wars' games. Specifically, the agreement covers games intended for 'the core gaming audience,' which typically for EA means traditional multi-platform $60 games and their derivatives. Disney retains the ability to make and license out 'Star Wars' titles within the mobile, social, tablet, and online game categories.

From John Pleasants, Co-President of Disney Interactive, "This agreement demonstrates our commitment to creating quality game experiences that drive the popularity of the Star Wars franchise for years to come. Collaborating with one of the world’s premier game developers will allow us to bring an amazing portfolio of new Star Wars titles to our fans around the world."

Considering Disney's focus on the next 'Star Wars' trilogy as a jumping off point for an hitherto unseen amount of concurrent 'Star Wars' media, it follows that EA will be developing games that involve the new trilogy, however, the announcement was quick to mention "all new stories." Also of significance is the nature of EA's commitment to utilizing the license by placing 'Star Wars' in the hands of the publisher's top studios. Bioware's ongoing support of the 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' MMO is currently the closest thing to a AAA 'Star Wars' title in the marketplace.

From Frank Gibeau, EA Labels President, "Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe. Three of our top studios will fulfill that dream, crafting epic adventures for Star Wars fans. DICE and Visceral will produce new games, joining the BioWare team which continues to develop for the Star Wars franchise. The new experiences we create may borrow from films, but the games will be entirely original with all new stories and gameplay."

Past 'Star Wars' projects that have captivated fans, but failed to be released include 'Star Wars 1313' and 'Battlefront 3.' With 'Battlefield' developer DICE and 'Dead Space' developer Visceral leading development of new 'Star Wars' titles, the games are not expected to come to the Wii U as EA has expressed a disinterest in bringing its proprietary engines to the Wii U without bringing its Origin client. Announcements of specific titles planned by EA may come at E3, and new 'Star Wars' titles can be expected to come to the PS4, PC, and Microsoft's new console.

This Generation: 'Star Wars 1313' Appears on PlayStation Germany's Facebook

Teases a 2013 release date for the PS3 version.

A post consisting of a gallery of 'Star Wars 1313' images was discovered on PlayStation Germany's Facebook by a NeoGAF user. This post contains the header "Star Wars 1313 erscheint 2013," thereby teasing a 2013 release date.

The game's demo at E3 had the internet declaring it a game destined for the 360 and PS3's respective successors, but LucasArts has remained mum to this point.

With any luck, this Facebook post will lead to a press release, until then full skepticism is recommended.

'Old Republic' May Be Going Free-to-Play

Subscriptions are down to 1.3 million and BioWare hopes to nab back those lost players.

'Old Republic' is one of the few MMOs that seemed like it stood a chance with the subscription model – it offers a different enough experience from 'Warcraft' that it seemed like a lock. As it turns out, subscriptions are down and the game might be going free-to-play.

One of the big markets that BioWare is hoping to recapture by making this move is the group of people who shelled out for the initial game purchase but didn't stick around after the 30 day free trial was up. Not paying the subscription cost, they reason, will make the game much more appealing to these folks.

"The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well," says Emmanuel Lusinchi, lead designer. "So we are looking at free-to-play but I can't tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on."

'Star Wars: 1313' Gameplay Revealed

From the gameplay demo shown, we're looking at a cover based shooter with QTEs. It's nice looking though!

It's been a while since we've gotten a really good Star Wars game, but 'Star Wars: 1313' just might be it. The gameplay trailer shown at E3 is nice looking and gives off a very 'Call of Duty' vibe thanks to some giant set pieces and intense in-game cutscenes.

'Star Wars: 1313' has had a crazy amount of hype behind it even before we got to see anything about it. It's being called a "mature" game, though we have yet to see if that translates to an M rating. Based on what we've seen, it does have the grittiness of a modern shooter, but death by laser and a lack of blood means we'll probably see a Teen rating here.

The trailer is about five minutes long, but skip to the three minute mark if you just want to see the game in action.

'Star Wars: The Old Republic' is Free This Weekend

Tags: Star Wars, Star Wars: The Old Republic, MMORPGs, Free Weekend (all tags)

If you haven't tried the game out yet, this is the perfect time to get in on the action.

The big problem with MMOs – and it's something you don't really find in other games – is that there's so much riding on you enjoying the game. If you pick up a crappy shooter, you're out the $60 but still have something to screw around with down the line, or sell if you bought a console copy. With an MMO you're out the upfront investment plus the money spent on a subscription, and if you want to play again down the line you have to pay for more game time.

It's a big barrier for people to get over but the folks at BioWare are giving you a chance to avoid all that. This weekend, starting on Thursday, 'Star Wars: The Old Republic' will be free to play. You can get in on the action as early as midnight on Thursday morning, central time.

Swing on over to the Weekend Pass page for some more details and, come Thursday, to download the game.

Witness the End of 'Star Wars Galaxies' From a Player's Point of View

Fan made videos capture the final moments of the game and pay tribute to the world they played in.

On December 15th, 'Star Wars Galaxies' shut down for good, another casualty in the MMO war. Whether you were a fan of the game or not, it's always a bit sad to see something ending for good. This holds true especially with MMOs, which are as much about the community as anything else.

Fans of the game have captured the final game moments in videos that span the range between silly , touching and everything in between. There's something to be said for a community that keeps on creating after the game they love is gone.

There are two videos that stand out in particular. The first is a tour of a player's in-game home. It's a place they put time and work into creating and - as of last Thursday - it's gone forever.

The second is an exploration of the 'Star Wars Galaxies' world on the final day set to some very sweet music. There's a lot going on in the video, but the part that's really striking is the ending. The player looks to the sky, watching the fireworks, and is then disconnected from the server for the last time.
