'Final Fantasy XV' PAX West 2016 Gameplay Video Features Sidequests, Boss Battles, And Chocobo Racing[teaser]Doing some modern-day dungeon diving.[/teaser] 'Final Fantasy XV' took the stage at PAX West this weekend to show off something a little different in the game. The crew traveled down into a goblin-infested mine to explore a sidequest that, according to the presenters, hadn't been seen before. Most of the gameplay video focuses on the game's combat as the game's four primary protagonists face off in group battles against hordes of goblins. The presenters showed off a mix of quick lighter weapons and heavy, two-handed weapons that dealt impressive damage when they managed to connect. The presenters also showed off a bit of specially concocted magic that ended up taking a turn for the worse when a lightning spell shocked every member of the group when it hit a metallic floor. The sidequest ended with a high-level boss, much too powerful for the lower-level player characters to handle. The presenters noted that that enemy would be present in that area no matter when the player reached it, so those looking for a strategic challenge can try to take on this particular sidequest earlier in the game while others might want to wait until they've managed to garner a couple dozen levels under their belt. The gameplay session then moves on to a quick Chocobo race before showing off a duo of boss battles. All told, the session produced around a half-hour of 'Final Fantasy XV' gameplay. You can watch the whole thing via the Twitch VOD below. The gameplay starts around the 20 minute mark. (Those wearing headphones might want to use caution as well—though the game audio sounds fine, the recorded commentary can run loud in places.) And Now, A Word With Jason Voorhees On The New 'Friday The 13th' Game[teaser]Spoilers: Most of those words come from a machete.[/teaser] Just because it's only September doesn't mean it's took early to plan for October. In this case October is the still-tentative release window for Gun Media's Kickstarted Friday the 13th game, and as a friendly reminder that we'll also be able to live our our horrible, horrible camp-counselor terrorizing fantasies in game form soon, Gun Media have released a new trailer at PAX West showing off all the delightful, arts, crafts, ad outdoor activities Mama Voorhee's little boy can participate in during his stay at Camp Crystal La--nah just kidding, it's mostly murder. No, seriously, we mean a LOT of murder. An egregious amount of murder is going on in this new trailer, showing off some various ways Jason can dispatch of the randy teens mucking around in his woods, and I can't tell if the intentionally cheesy hair metal makes it better or worse. Decide for yourself. Maybe not while you're at work, though. You can find the latest info on 'Friday the 13th: The Game' linked from our Video Game Release Schedule. Droids From My Father: 'ReCore's Launch Trailer Shows More Gameplay And Story[teaser]Thanks, Dad.[/teaser] Microsoft has managed to keep a tight lid on 'ReCore' all this time, but with 10 days remaining, it looks like they're getting ready to lift that lid a little more. Today, they've released a new launch trailer. Narrated by main character Joule's father, the good Dr. Thomas Adams, we not only get a closer look at Joule's AI companions, but also some more of the wild, gravity defying gameplay they'll help her accomplish. If someone wasn't sure this wasn't the product of the folks responsible for 'Metroid Prime', this trailer should take care of that in a hurry. The game's still set to hit on the 13th for the refreshingly low price of $40, which will also net players the PC version of the game as part of Xbox's Play Anywhere initiative. Till then, listen to dad: You can find the latest info on 'ReCore' linked from our Video Game Release Schedule. Order from Amazon Source: Xbox WirePosted Sat Sep 3, 2016 at 08:27 AM PDT by: -
Hey There Delilah: 'Firewatch' Finally Makes The Jump To The Xbox One This Month[teaser]New features to roll out along with it.[/teaser] The Xbox One is finally starting to play a little catch up with its PC/PS4 brethren. Last week, we found out 'The Witness' was finally coming to the system; this week, it's 'Firewatch's turn. 'Firewatch' will be headed to Xbox One on September 21st. But it'll be bringing a wee bit more with it than just the main game (which, by the way, is fantastic as it is). On that same day, Campo Santo will be adding the Firewatch Audio Tour to the game, which is being described by the developers as "one part scavenger hunt, one part museum tour, one part game dev workshop, mixed with a dash of inside Campo Santo goofs". The trailer for the Xbox One port shows a little teaser of it at the end. It's looking like an extremely fun audio commentary and then some, and this is defiitely a game that begs for it. But wait, there's more. Campo Santo will also be adding a free-roam mode to the game, which will put the game into a fully open world mode, complete with a non-story-dependent day/night cycle, and some extra secrets to find out in the Shoshone wilderness. It'll roll out to everyone eventually, but as an apparent "sorry for the wait", the Xbox One will be getting it first. Anyone who missed out the first time, or wants their fleeting glimpse of the audio mode, check out the new trailer below. Source: Campo SantoPosted Sat Sep 3, 2016 at 07:54 AM PDT by: -
Get a Look at the Crazy Theme Park That is Call of Duty XP 2016[teaser]So much to see; so little time.[/teaser] In case you are not aware, the Call of Duty XP 2016 is happening right now, and it is a massive event. I've got impressions from the brand new 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' mulitplayer mode here, as well as the PlayStation VR 'Jackal Assault' first ever Call of Duty VR experience here. These items are really just the tip of the iceberg, especially for event attendees. Fortunately, I have some shots below that show things before the masses arrived. The Forum itself houses among other things, the Call of Duty World League Championship. And yes, just about everywhere you look, there is PlayStation hardware. (And to a lesser extent, ASTRO Gaming headsets.) The big tents house the many playable new 'Call of Duty' games at the event. 'Infinite Warfare' MP, 'Zombies in Spaceland,' 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered,' and 'Call of Duty: Black Ops III – Salvation.' Also, for all to see, there is Zombie Laser Tag. The extraordinary Nuketown Paintball, which contains a Twitch Plays Nuketown turret, is in one corner. On the other corner is the zipline the floats above half the event. There's more as well. Like the Armory exhibition, vendor booths, and Juggernaut Wrestling All-in-all, this event really outdoes many. Even with a single franchise focus, there is so much to do here, and much of it is pretty physical. This is only the second Call of Duty XP (it's been five years since the first). The convergence of different 'Call of Duty' aspects into one celebration is something pretty unforgettable. I hope a third event is not too far off. Look at the patch kit I've assembled. The patches come from each stop/activity, and the tin brings it all together.Posted Fri Sep 2, 2016 at 12:00 PM PDT by: -
'Call of Duty' Takes on PlayStation VR with the 'Jackal Assault'[teaser]Splashing bandits in VR.[/teaser] There's a lot going on at the Call of Duty XP 2016, not the least of which is the debut of 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' multiplayer mode (see impressions here). But at one end of the crowded lot outside The Forum in Inglewood, CA, there sits a set of cargo containers. Within those cargo containers is the first 'Call of Duty' virtual reality content. Based off of the Jackal fighter spacecraft in the upcoming 'Infinite Warfare,' this 'Call of Duty' VR experience uses Sony's PlayStation VR headset to replicate the Jackal's cockpit. There is a bit more to it as the demo stations at CoD XP 2016 uses an actual multi-screen cockpit layout, a DS4 controller, and a force feedback chair to compliment the PlayStation VR headset. One cargo container contains a passive video briefing, notable for the mannequin-looking pilot model immediately adjacent. The themed briefing explains the simple controls. Using analog sticks, the thrust, direction, and lift of the Jackal are controlled. L1 does a roll, R2 fires the gun along the ships axis while L2 operates the lock on and fire for the missiles. Naturally, the VR headset controls the point of view, but it also controls the aiming reticle for the missiles and for the scanner. The demo starts pretty casually, launching the Jackal and then going on a simple check the space carriers for damage and destroy some debris mission. Of course, things get hairy when an onslaught of enemy SATO spacecraft attack. This is where things get good. Piloting the Jackal is very natural. It's almost arcade-like, and I imagine that this control ease will be found in the game's proper single player. Here in VR, it's one of the best VR demos I've ever done. The hardware is really dialed in (a rarity for demos), but more to the point, aiming with my eyes, which I've tried to do in countless other VR applications, worked great. In just a few minutes, I found and destroyed 36 enemy spacecraft. (I bet double that is possible.) The demo culminated in a focused attack on an enemy destroyer. I wound up flying right into the beam of a massive energy weapon, and this brief look into the abyss was as promising in terms of space fleet combat as anything I've yet seen in 'Infinite Warfare.' So having such a fun, if brief peak at what has been created with 'Call of Duty' and PlayStation VR, I'm left asking, just what's next? Activision announced today that 'Jackal Assault' will be available come launch. But I can't imagine that this will be the only 'Call of Duty' VR experience. 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's Multiplayer Built on Combat Rigs, Free Movement, Crafting, and Sinister Attacks[teaser]Close quarters corralling will occur.[/teaser] Editor's Notes: Impressions based of 'Infinite Warfare' at Call of Duty XP 2016. There will be a 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' beta. It's coming October 14th. Pick your Combat Rig, Loadout, Perks, Traits, mode and then get ready for the 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' multiplayer mode. Yesterday, following a detailed briefing that got way down into the weeds so to speak, I did just that, and then played through a mix featuring three of the game's 17 multiplayer modes. I was immediately drawn to the Stryker Rig class with its Gravity Vortex Gun and Trophy Drone trait. (I like the idea of a drone protecting my back.) Eventually though, after trying out several other rigs, like the familiar Warfighter and the stealthy Phantom, I settled on the Synaptic as my immediate favorite. (FTL and Merc are the two other Rigs.) Not only does the Synaptic look cool as it's basically a sleek robot with transforming arm guns, but it has a Trait that allows it to get faster following each kill. Seeing the speed boost displayed by other Synaptics, I knew I had to try it. Being faster, like a scout, but not weaker is a big draw in this newest 'Call of Duty.' And that is probably the rub of 'Infinite Warfare.' Much of the core of 'Black Ops III' multiplayer is here. The wall-running, guns up movement, and special powers fit the futuristic setting while at the same time the modern warfare core remains. This is evident in how there are two distinct varieties of weapons. There are ballistic weapons with a new look but which retain a modern feel, and then there are the energy based weapons, which even with their batteries still manage to feel like guns and not like phasers. The Rigs, which are classes which define both special abilities and Traits, are analogous to the Specialists of 'Black Ops III.' But a Rig is both customizable and changeable. Changing Rigs and Loadouts during matches is an important part of 'Infinite Warfare.' The ability to change these aspects while playing should be a boon for new players, while at the same time, letting pros make adjustments and be more surprising. And surprise is what I expect most players will feel when they and a teammate or two are sucked into a gravity vortex, or else, have to move through a team worth of zero G floating bodies. Amazingly, 'Infinite Warfare' has players throwing out Tactical and Lethal items, like the awesome Biospikes, using their left hands. The point there being that this is even an even more guns up type game as throwing a grenade can be done while aiming a weapon. Naturally this affected Team Deathmatch, but it was even more important in Domination, as taking and holding those A, B, C points saw a lot throwing and tossing support items out. One of the new modes, Defense, made for a frenetic experience. It's all about drone control. Grabbing the ball grants one team control, but it's not that simple. Matches saw players throwing the ball at the opposing team just to make the recipient grab it, lose their weapon (as a carrier) and then get shot. The Breakout map, which takes place at some craze height on Earth in a mountain top installation, is probably one of the more conventional settings. One idea with 'Infinite Warfare' was to make maps that take CoD players to radical new venues (like say Jupiter's moons). The new 'Terminal' map, which is now space shuttles on the moon, saw some real carnage as the in-shuttle corridor was a take-all-comers grinder. Compelling players into face-to-face to combat must have been an important part of the MP design. I can tell in the maps and in the gameplay. The special abilities seem to charge a bit slower than 'Black Ops III' but they nevertheless come into a play often enough. (Too often for some I wager.) At first, I was getting smashed by mechanized riot shields and fearing a canine style take down, but these close quarter specials, of which there are quite a few, can be side stepped by even the most hesitant player, and the results of dodging such an attack and then taking that special-using player down are not to be missed. The ranged specials, in comparison, require accuracy to hit. And if the Call of Duty XP 2016 is any indication, the PS4 and DS4 are the go-to. This similar but different 'Call of Duty' isn't exactly the multiplayer mode that I would have asked for. (I want Jackals, like in the VR and in the single player. Like some kind of Spec Ops.) But it's already distinct from 'Black Ops III,' and that's after just one day. There is an entire crafting system built into the 'Infinite Warfare' multiplayer that will let players create prototype weapons with unique perks. Earning a Tactical Nuke for a 25+ Killstreak is the kind ability that will get players crafting. (Speaking of streaks, watch out for that RC-8 pilotable 8' killer robot.) When 'Infinite Warfare' goes public, it'll be easier to discern if the speed and action will really fall in line with 'Black Ops III,' or stand up well on its own. The new Rigs, maps, modes, traits and so on would seem to make that different feeling accurate. For now, I welcome what does appears to be the natural evolution of 'Call of Duty.' Call of Duty PlayStation VR Experience 'Jackal Assault' Coming to the PS4[teaser]The first Call of Duty VR experience.[/teaser] At Call of Duty XP 2016, one item in the theme park uses PlayStation VR and that would be 'Jackal Assault.' (Impressions here.) But what about everyone not attending the event? Today, Activision made it official, 'Jackal Assault' (or the home version at any rate) will be a PS4 exclusive come the launch of 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare.' The Jackal is the flying space fighter from the upcoming new game. (Again, impressions here.) 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' Multiplayer Beta Announced, While Remastered Goes to 16 Maps[teaser]And how.[/teaser] One mantra that has followed 'Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare' since it was announced has been, "will there be a beta." Announced today, at the onset of 'Call of Duty XP,' is the answer. The mulitplayer beta will come to PS4 first on October 14th. Right now, it's preorder customers that will access to the beta. Expect Xbox One and PC details to follow. Meanwhile, another constant refrain has been about 'Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered' and its multiplayer maps. Rally Racing Title 'WRC 6' Will Feature Split Screen Play[teaser]Local multiplayer is making a comeback.[/teaser] Kylotonn Racing Games have announced that 'WRC 6' will include a split screen mode and allow for players to play multiplayer locally. The heavily requested feature has become a rare sight in the genre, as racing games are increasingly opting to only include online multiplayer. Hopefully 'WRC 6' will start a trend here as it'll include the mode when it launches this October for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. The studio also announced that 'WRC 6,' which is the official game of the FIA World Rally Championship, will feature several different cover variants throughout the world. The Abu Dhabi Total World Rally Team will adorn the cover in France, the UK, Middle East and Brazil, while the M-Sport World Rally Team will be on the cover in Italy, South Africa, Eastern Europe, United States, and Canada. Finally, Hyundai Motorsport's Thierry Neuville and Nicolas Gilsoul will be on the cover in Benelux, Spain, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, China, and Korea. Check out the local multiplayer mode in action by watching the trailer below: 'WRC 6' releases this October for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.
